Pasquale Ventapane was a fine Neopolitan violin maker from the early part of the 19th century. He worked on the model of Giuseppe Gagliano, but built his instruments larger and broader. The scrolls are large and well carved. The arching on this violin is very flat resulting in a powerful tone. The varnish is a warm dark brown color over a golden ground. It is signed by the maker and dated 1831. The condition is unusually fine for an instrument this old. This violin will fill a concert hall easily.
